Ghost jobs explained

What is a ghost job?

A ghost job is a job listing that appears to be open even though there may not be an active hiring process behind it.

From the outside, it can look like any other vacancy. The difference is that the listing may remain online, reappear or be reposted without clear evidence that the company is actively progressing candidates for that role.

Why ghost jobs matter.

Applying for a job takes time. Candidates research the company, adapt their CV, write cover letters, answer application questions and prepare for possible interviews.

When a listing is not connected to an active recruitment process, that effort may go nowhere.

The difficulty is that job seekers usually cannot see what is happening inside a company's hiring process. That makes observable signals around the job posting itself especially useful.

Common ghost job warning signs.

No single signal proves that a listing is a ghost job. But several patterns can make a vacancy worth a closer look.

Repeated reposting

The same or a very similar vacancy appears again and again over time.

Long-active listings

A job remains open for an unusually long period without obvious changes.

Disappear and reappear patterns

A listing closes and later returns, sometimes more than once.

Very generic descriptions

The role contains little detail about the actual team, responsibilities or hiring context.

Persistent company-wide patterns

Similar behavior appears across multiple vacancies from the same company.

Limited posting history

Sometimes there simply is not enough historical data to make a strong assessment.

A warning sign is not proof.

A job being reposted does not automatically mean it is a ghost job. A long-running vacancy can also have legitimate explanations.

Companies may be hiring several people for the same role, struggling to find suitable candidates or recruiting continuously for positions with high turnover.

That is why ghost job detection should be treated as a risk assessment rather than a verdict.

How Unveil helps detect ghost job risk.

Unveil looks beyond the text of the job description. It uses observable job-posting history and company career-page data to assess patterns around a vacancy.

This can include how long a job has been active, whether it has been reposted, whether it disappeared and returned, and how those patterns compare with other tracked listings.

When enough data is available, Unveil displays a ghost job risk score from 1–100 together with the main signals behind the assessment.

What should you do before applying?

Check whether the role still exists on the company's official career page, look at how recently it was posted and pay attention to repeated reposting or unusual listing history.

The goal is not necessarily to avoid every suspicious vacancy. It is to understand the risk before deciding how much time to spend on the application.
